makes the magazine sound very exclusive, only a certain handful read this magazine. Refers to the magazine as being king like, or the best magazine.

 something that is related to all types of  music, what I like about this is that it can be potentially used for any genre.

make the reader feel exclusive and as if they are going to know more about the artists in the magazine then anyone else. It also adds a sense of class to the magazine, makes them feel different to everyone one else and as if they were going behind the scenes.

I am using this example of king, a Russian hip hop number 1 magazine. this particular cover is there best ever selling magazine. as you can see it main feature is jay z who many people know and can automatically tell who he is, even the majority of those who are not interested in the genre of hip hop.

 If you look at the title of KING it is in big bold simple font which stands out. his head is in front of the title, this is an act of confidence to say that we are so popular that people will know who we are anyway. the main colors used are yellow, black, white and parts of grey. these are all very simple colors when blended with one another stand out and have a big effect on how it effects the readers interest in the magazine,

Readership profile

Age range: the age range for my music magazine is males aged 16-23. I have chosen this age range because the majority of people who like the genre of hip hop are in this age range and it is mostly male dominated. This age group are always looking for new artists to listen to, so my magazine as well as talking about the most famous artists will also introduce new and upcoming artists. It will tell them who is great to go and see live at the moment and when new albums from their favorite artists will be released. This age group love to go to gigs so I will base my reviews on how they perform that so the readers get a specific idea of who to go and see. My music genre is based on the fashion of people who read it. Not only do the readers want to be rap like them they want to know how to dress like them. My magazine will contain a lot about how to wear a suit, how to dress for summer etc. it also links with the content of hip hop magazines, many people younger than 16 will have permission from there parents to read it as some of the content or wording may be explicit. 

General lifestyle:

 most of the people that I am trying to attract will either be in school at university or just becoming employed. If they are employed then the majority will have a low income. People with maybe not so much money like to read about people who were in a position where they had a low income to becoming rich and wealthy. A lot of articles about rappers are based on this sort of story as many of them came from poor backgrounds.  

 House style:

      

      My music magazine will contain the genre of hip hop. It will also contain other smaller genres that are associated with the genre of hip hop.

·         The colors will be mainly black and white to show a classy/retro theme. The mast head will be in graffiti like font and it will be black and bold to stand out from the white background.

·         On my front cover I will have a very well-known rapper. This is so when people see the magazine it will catch their eye as they will want to read about a famous rapper.

Character profile- 

Franklin is an 18 year old who lives in Brooklyn USA. He is into rap and does a little himself. The type of rap that he is into is 90s mix. He tries to get into newer rap but seems to find the lyrics rather dull and with no real meaning behind it. His main role model is jay z as he also grew up in Brooklyn. His hobbies are American football and basketball which he plays at a high level and is looking to represent the state, he also loves cars and music. He isn't great with school work and didn't do so well in his recent exams but he is trying to turn it around as he wants to get into a decent college. He has a job working in a customs garage, re decorating and repairing cars, he earns $9 an hour. He spends his money on new cars, sound systems and going out with his friends. He is also a great lover of food, and loves steak houses. The brands that best represent my reader are YMCMB, NIKE, ADDIDAS.

the reason why i think this logo would look good on my music magazine front cover is because it firstly has clear bold font that stands out to any one looking at the magazine. the typical street hip hop fashion is shown by the two people standing either side of the title. the colour also goes with the house style i have chosen, my photography will be black and white and i think this will stand out from the darkened white/grey background. this logo will catch peoples eyes and make them want to look further into the magazine.

reasons why this could work on my front cover, it is a very decorative and unique logo, the person in the middle of the logo represents that it is a hip hop magazine. 

reasons why this would not work on my front cover, the font is to small to make an immediate and long lasting effect on the person who is looking at the front cover. also some of the other logos that i have made stand are simple as easier to understand then this one.

These photos are those that will be similar to photography that I will do for my front cover. 

the reason why I want my model to be wearing a suit is because it represents Kellens personality as the main story is about him and his childhood. the suit creates contrast between his poor background and what he has become now. in my photograph i also wanted a simple background so the focus is just on Kellen himself. the best examples of this are the two top pictures displayed above. all of these photos have particular aspects that I want in mine. 

the bottom left has a pose. I think having a small differ in position with your hands adds a lot of power to the photo making it striking to the eye. in the bottom right photo he is looking directly at the camera making the story more direct and personal.   

PHOTOGRAPHY

Picture colours

The reason why I have picked these three colours is that firstly black and white are very simple but bulky colours, by mixing the two it can make pictures and text stand out even more then if you we using bright colours. It also makes it classier and retro, giving it a more exclusive feel for the reader.

The reason why I have added red into my choice of colours is to get the balance between bright and attractive and retro look.

 The only change that I would make to this picture is his head position. In my photo he will be looking directly at the camera.

 But other than this is a very good example of what my photo will look like.

clothing 

The clothing that he will be wearing depends on the location that the photo is being taken.

·        Victorian street- the clothing that will be worn in this will be

The reason I am choosing these items of clothing is to make him look very elegant, independent in the context that he doesn’t always wear baggy jumpers and so on unlike the usual rapper does. Also the contrast between wearing the suit and the snap back is to show that he has become a star and has become a star after being brought up in a difficult environment, but he still does have a touch of the sort of fashion he use to have. The accessories in like the walking stick and the watch are purely to add effect to the photo and make him almost look like a god farther figure.

The reason why I am choosing these items of clothing is because it makes the photo have a slightly mystical feel to the picture. I want this picture to be very striking so the model will be looking directly at the camera to give a more direct message of what the article is about to the reader.   

Photography

location

Victorian Street-A wealthy and classy location. The reason one of my ideas for the photography is a Victorian street is because it contrasts with his upbringing. Going from living in poverty in Brooklyn, to strutting down a wealthy street in a suit. One of the things that I want to do in the photography of my character is to show his independent fashion that people admire so much. This photo will be shot in full colour rather than black and white as I want the picture to bring out the colours in the building and on the streets. The kind of clothing that he will be wearing are defined suite but then with a certain accessory that relates back to his childhood. I want the picture to have a cold autumn feel to it with autumn leaves for affect.    

Woods/forest- I think that using this location will add a mystical feel to the picture especially if taken at night. In this shot he will be looking directly at th camera to make the reader feel that he is specifically looking at the reader and telling them the story of his struggle as a child and how he developed into such a star. 

Estate- An estate which is quite run down, somewhere that looks like somewhere that he grew up. Links back to his childhood and makes the reader think about what it would have been like growing up in these conditions. This picture would be ideal for the article because as well as the text describing his childhood the image will give them a real idea of what it all looks like.

Band or solo artist?

my artist will be a solo artist.

Who are they? Profiles of the individuals?

My artist is going to be presented by kellen keane. He is a very well-known rapper who has sold a record number singles and records. Everyone in the hip hop industry inspires to be like him as he came from a very poor background growing up in Brooklyn to become one of the world’s most well-known rappers at a very young age. His stage name is JAZ-O but his real name is tommy Jordan. He is also a great name in fashion and teenager’s especially like to follow his trend. He is very classy, wearing top dollar suits and flashy gold Rolexes. What also makes this rapper so casual and classy in the public’s eyes is that he is married to one of the top models for vogue. His personality is said to be kind and wise, he is very well known for his quotes. He is hard working and hates to leave a job not finished and not to its full potential.

Why are they doing the interview? 

JAZ-O is doing this interview as the magazine want to hear about his child hood. The magazine wants to know:

·         Where he grew up?

·         In what conditions did he grow up?

·         What his family were like and they affected his future?

·         How he did in school?

·         What was he like as a child compared to the present?

·         How did he become interested in rap?

·         How did he develop into such a star?

The reason why I am basing the article on his childhood is to give everyone a little extra about the artist. Readers want to know the interesting facts and what makes them who they are and I think a large part of this comes from their child hood, and in particular their education, family and the environment they grew up in. these three factors are massive factors that determines what sort of person they will grow up to be.

 

 

HIP HOP MAGAZINES

The most popular and bestselling hip hop magazine is ‘VIBE’ which Is why I will be using this particular magazine for a couple of examples.

Hip hop is a mostly male dominated genre, but it has seen an increase in females reading hip hop magazines and downloading rap music. One of the reasons for this is because it is only a recent thing that people like Rihanna and Beyoncé (high performing female singers) come together with people like Jay z, drake and Eminem (high performing male rappers) to feature in each other’s songs causing a wider variety of genders to explore different genres.  

 

Facts and figures for magazine vibe

As you can see from this image the ages that read ‘VIBE’ magazine most are 18-34 year olds. This is mainly because a lot of the magazines that are published have explicit content in them and are only suitable for older teenager/young adults and above.
